Dear Sharp Family,

We, at Sharp, would like to thank you for your support and added patience as we all work through the pandemic and distance learning.

ATTENDANCE:

As we continue with our distance learning in LAUSD, we have been monitoring attendance for all our students in the District. At Sharp, we have 20% of our students with 90% or less attendance. According to the State Compulsory Attendance Law, students from ages 6-18 legally must attend school. In order for students to be marked present for the day, the following has to happen: Students need to attend a zoom session or students need to complete and turn in work by 11:59 pm of the day assigned or the parent needs to communicate with the teacher about school (issues with connecting or technology issues). If students are marked absent, parents will receive a phone call from the district and the school. We still need to clear all absences per District and State policy, if your child is out parents need to provide an excuse in written form (letter, email, text) to the teacher or school.

RETURN TO SCHOOL:

Although the District has not set a return date for students to return to school physically, the District is preparing to transition to in-school learning. As of today, the District is offering COVID 19 testing for staff and students to monitor the positivity rate for COVID 19 in our communities. A letter has been sent out by teachers (via communication platforms), it is posted on our Sharp Schoology site, and on our website.  We are also sending the letters to the homes via the United States mail.  We are asking that parents make appointments to have their child tested. The closest testing site to Sharp Elementary is Pacoima Middle School. Students will need to be tested and monitored daily to be able to attend in-person classes. The District will also give parents the option to continue distance learning.

Many parents have asked about mental health support during distance learning. Parents are asked to call the District Mental Health hotline for students and families at 213-241-3840. We, unfortunately, do not have counselors on campus and cannot provide you with in-home support. Our availability for support comes in the form of technology, textbooks, supplies, and technological support.

 Many parents have been asking for tutoring support. Yes, the District is offering one-on-one tutoring on a few campuses as a pilot program and hopes to extend this to all campuses.  Before this can happened at Sharp, students need to be COVID  19 tested and we have to have staff willing to work the tutoring program after school or on Saturday. The students selected will be based on data from assessments and work turned into the teachers. We will be selecting students with the greatest need based on data since we have limited resources.

TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT:

We continue providing technical support for parents and guardians needing help to enroll in the parent portal. We also have technological support for resetting passwords of students, issues with emails and passwords, difficulties with hotspots, Chromebook, or IPad(s).  The Technological help is available Monday-Friday 8 am-11 am or 12:30-2:30 pm daily.
